WOCHE 6 | ECOLOGIES OF WASTE IN MUMBAI

Die Studierenden werden sich im Studio Mumbai mit dem Thema "Abfall" beschäftigen. Hier ein Ausschnitt der Aufgabenbeschreibung:

"Mumbai, a peninsula with more than 15 millions inhabitants has to deal each day with different challenges, problems and chances. One of the most interesting topics is related to waste. The IN:CH 2014 studio intends to question the need for large dumps and takes the problem of waste in the city head on. Managing what we do not need – waste – ought to begin at home, the neighbourhood, and extend to larger collective spaces such as markets, malls, industries, transportation hubs, and so on. The various built institutions of the city also exhibit their own specific typologies of waste production. Though as societies we may reduce the amount of waste we produce at each urban scale, waste is inevitable, and its management poses a challenging problem for planners and designers.
The students begin this process by taking a look at different types of waste generation and consumption, and different spaces in which they get generated and consumed. Between them lie several institutions, systems and actors that move, distil, treat, reuse, reorganize, remake and finally discard what the city does not need. We will also look at waste at various scales, in their various locations and through various urban types. As a methodology we will begin by identifying urban typologies - broadly classified under residential, commercial and industrial uses - across these scales and locations. Malls, bazaars, markets, housing societies, institutions, small scale industries, cow and buffalo sheds and many more will become the points from where waste will be traced. Each group can, in the course of the studio, through discussions and on ground field studies help us comprehend and suggest approaches that address the city‘s paramount crisis of waste and recommend strategies for its management. All the results - of the analysis as well as of the interventions - shall be visualised with the aid of infographics on 2 A0 posters."

Die Studierenden bekommen diverse Inputs, damit das komplexe Thema  verstehen und bewältigen können:
  • "Mumbai - die Entstehungsgeschichte", um die Stadt besser verstehen zu können.
  • Input von Seema Redkar, Officer On Special Duty at Municipal Corporation Of Greater Mumbai
  • "Solid Waste & Governance" von Dr. Binti Singh vom Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences
